Popular support for military intervention and anti-establishment alternatives in Tunisia: Appraising outsider eclecticism

Popular attitudes in support of authoritarian alternatives and weak party systems constitute important threats to democratic consolidation the stability new democracies. This article explores popular alienation from established political actors Tunisia. Under what conditions do citizens elites power institutional infrastructure a democracy? Drawing on an original, nationally representative survey Tunisia administered 2017, this examines three categories outsiders.Military interventionism appears people’s preferences for anti-system politics—the most immediate challenge country’s transition. Anti-political establishment sentiments are shown enhanced role main trade union as civil-society alternative elites.
